How to get or renew a U.S. passport in 7 steps
Step 1: Decide if you need a new passport or a renewal
The first decision determines which form you'll use:
Use DS-11 for:
- • First passport ever
- • Lost, stolen, or damaged passport
- • Expired over 15 years ago
- • Issued when under 16
Use DS-82 for:
- • Clean, recent renewals
- • Valid or expired under 5 years
- • Issued after age 16
- • Undamaged passport
IVS asks a few questions and routes you instantly to DS-11 or DS-82.
Step 2: Choose routine or expedited service
Timing affects everything:
Routine Service
6-9 weeks processing
Expedited Service
2-3 weeks processing
Many countries require 6 months validity remaining on your passport.
Step 3: Gather required documents
You'll need proof of citizenship and identity:
Proof of Citizenship
Birth certificate, previous passport, or naturalization certificate
Proof of Identity
Valid driver's license, state ID, or current passport
Step 4: Get a compliant passport photo
Photo mistakes cause delays. Requirements include:
- • 2x2 inches, white background
- • Recent photo (within 6 months)
- • Neutral expression, eyes open
- • No glasses, hats, or filters
IVS checks your photo for common rejection issues.

DS-82 (Renewal)

- • Use full legal name exactly as it appears on documents

Step 6: Pay the correct fees

30 (renewal) or 65 (new passport)

$35 (DS-11 only, paid at post office)
Step 7: Submit and track
